Admissions

The Lookout Adolescent Unit is a 32 bed inpatient facility for children and young people aged 12 – 18 years old. The young people we care for are experiencing mental health difficulties that can no longer be managed in the community. This may include eating disorders or difficulties, mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The unit has three wards:

  • Pegasus Ward, a 12 bed specialist eating disorder service
  • Phoenix Ward, a 12 bed general adolescent unit
  • Hercules Ward, an 8 bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for children and young people needing more intense support.

Phoenix Ward and Hercules Ward can admit young people on a planned or emergency basis.

Pegasus Ward will offer planned admissions with the involvement of the young person, their families and their care coordinator.

On admission, a care plan will be developed between the team and the young person, which will be regularly reviewed. The length of admission will depend on the state of the young person’s mental and physical health.

Young people on Phoenix Ward and Pegasus Ward will be able to have both escorted and unescorted leave when they are well enough to do so. Our ultimate aim is to ensure a safe and supported discharge back into the community with the appropriate support in place.

Young people approaching 17 and 6 months will be supported with the transition to adult mental health services if this is appropriate.
