The Primary Pathways

The Primary Pathways is our small group provision for primary aged pupils based at the Sherwood Education Centre.

Primary Pathways enables pupils to transition between 3 different pathways so academic and personal progress can be developed and maintained. HHELC works closely with home schools regarding transition across the pathways and back to their school or other appropriate setting, when appropriate.


The Sherwood Education Centre is a specialist educational setting for children who meet strict school admissions criteria.

If you have a pupil who has been absent from school consecutively or cumulatively with the same medical/mental health condition, you can make a referral for educational support from HHELC. Please note this requires signatures from the parent/carers and from the Head Teacher.

An Admissions and Complex Case Panel meeting is convened to discuss all new referrals.

The Admission and Complex Case Panels decision is final, and they will only offer places if they believe that HHELC will be able to meet the individual needs of the pupil in the following order:

  1. Live in the City and have an ECHP.
  2. Live in the City and are Looked after, or previously looked after.
  3. Referred by the Head Teacher of a Nottingham city based school, health professional or social worker, and that the pupil lives in the City and that HHELC believes the facility is the right setting for the pupil.
  4. The pupil is referred by the Head Teacher of a County school but the child lives in Nottingham city.
  5. If places are still available then places could be offered to those pupils who meet the above criteria but live outside the Nottingham city boundary with the cost being met by their home local authority as set out in the Service Level Agreement.

The Pathway of Provision

HHELC Pathways Provision enables students to transition between different pathways so academic and personal progress can be developed and maintained. HHELC works closely with home schools regarding transition across the pathways and back to their school or other appropriate setting, when appropriate.

Pathway One. 

Teaching generally based in the pupil’s home.

Pathway One is available for pupils from KS1 and KS2, with a medical need who are too poorly to attend their own school. The length of a student’s time receiving teaching at home is dependent on their individual needs. Teachers tailor the curriculum to meet the needs of pupil in consultation with the Home School.

Students are allocated a Key Worker. The Key Worker has responsibility for progress and communication with parents and school. Teaching is for up to five hours per week, at times arranged by the Key Worker. If appropriate sessions may take place outside of the pupil’s home in approved venues. Microsoft Teams may be used if appropriate. 

Pathway Two.

The provision at the Sherwood education Centre is designed so that primary pupils can work in small groups, in a supportive and secure learning environment, taught by qualified Teachers and Teaching Assistants.

Pupils follow individual programmes of work in line with their level of ability and personal circumstances.

The curriculum is devised to engage learners and has the National Curriculum at its core. Significant emphasis is placed on raising learners’ self-esteem, self-confidence and social interaction skills, as well as preparing them for life. Arrangements are made for Y6 learners to take their SATS at the Sherwood Education Centre if appropriate and where they are unable to do so at their mainstream school. In this situation, the learners Home School holds responsibility for entering them for the SATs and applying for access arrangements as appropriate

Pathway Three.

As every pupil’s progress will be monitored and reviewed regularly, in conjunction with parents and the home school, they will be able to move from one pathway to another in a flexible way to meet their needs.

Assessment may indicate that reintegration back to mainstream should be considered – Pathway Three. HHELC staff, in conjunction with the Home School will carefully manage reintegration back to mainstream or other education setting.

The School Day

Pathway 1 

Outreach typically consists of up to 5 hours of education per week, depending on the age and needs of the pupil.

Pathway 2 

The school day is 9:30 – 3:00

Pupils may be offered a full or part time place depending on their needs.

Pathway 3

Pupils transition on to the next educational setting.

Reporting Absence

All absences from school must be reported to the school on the first day of absence by telephone on 0115 9153862, ideally before registration at 9.30 am.

The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amended) Regulations 2013 outlines amendments to the 2006 regulations for attendance.

Since September 2013 headteachers are no longer authorised to grant leave of absence unless there are exceptional circumstances. Requests for absence must therefore be put in writing at least 10 days before the planned absence and authorisation will not be granted retrospectively.  Leave taken without authorisation must be recorded as ‘unauthorised’ and parents may incur penalty fines.  

Absence codes are entered into the register to identify the reasons for absence, including late arrivals. This is a legal requirement for all schools and is used to monitor attendance and absence. Repeated late arrival, unauthorised absence or low attendance rates may trigger a referral to the Educational Welfare Service in order to provide support and guidance as required.
